It is a very small island that is popular today for hikers, campers, devotees as well as paranormal seekers. It used to be a village but today it is a village without villagers.

In a deserted part of Pulau Ubin Island lies a mysterious Taoist Shine. It is known by a few names such as : Lady Datok Shrine , German Girl Shine, Berlin Heiligtum , 柏林苑,俗称拿督姑娘庙. But most commonly known as German Girl Shine ( 德国拿督姑娘庙).

On your way there, you'll get to a fork in the road. At the fork you'll see this sign on the left, in the shrubs Keep heading in the direction of the park; by now you should be on a gravel trail. You'll eventually see the back side of a yellow structure on the left. Turn left towards it and you could see a small red hut. The door is open always but

Who is this Deity Goddess ?

This Taoist Shine itself honors a 18 year old German girl who died there back during the 1910s. The identity of this girl is unknown. Nobody knows her real name. The only thing known was that she was a Roman catholic. It was believed that she was born in year 1896 & died in year 1914.

This Shine itself is highly famous and popular particularly to gamblers both in Singapore and Malaysia. Devotees reach as far as Thailand , Myanmar and even Europe. It is said that prayers and wishes and often answered and delivered. Her faithful devotees believed that she had became an Angel Goddess/Deity.

Devotees pray to her for all sort of things. They asked for blessings, peace, good luck, health & harmony. But the majorities pray to her for winning lotteries and wealth. She is among one of highly must pray to deities that is very well known and famous to most of the hard core gamblers.
Many people also go to her for spiritual interventions as well too !

Her Origins

Nobody Knows her real name. Back then during the colonial period of a Singapore, 2 German families, Daniel Brandt and Hermann Muhlinga used to owned a coffee plantation at the northeastern part of Pulau Ubin.

However during WW1 ( 1914-1918) when German attack Europe, & UK declare war on Germany on 4th August 1914, the British decided to size all assets , properties and belongings of Germans inside their colony and Singapore was no exception.

Her biological parents were said to have been captured & send to detention barracks in mainland Singapore, however their frighten daughter managed to escaped into the woods uncaptured.
No one really knew what happened, but it was highly believed that she had slip and felled off from the cliff and died when her head smashed against a piece of rock.

The next day some local Malays (Boyanese) plantation workers who for her father spotted her body & there was ants all over her. They covered her corpse with sand and offered prayers to her. They would throw flowers and incense each time they pass by her death spot.

Eventually, a group of Chinese factory workers of the island carted her remains to the crest of the quarry's hill and gave her a proper burial. It was believed that maybe what they did was as a gesture of thanks to the kindness they had received from her parents.

It was uncertain if it was because of ghost sightings that eventually her remains was cremated into a urn and & moved into a Chinese Taoist Shine erected for her whereby she was being honoured as the local deity and since then the village received her blessings .

After the war, her family came back in search of her tombstone but as they could not locate their precious daughter remains, they bitterly left Singapore and never returned. Till date, her family members cannot be traced.

Her Shine

Perhaps after the shine was erected to ho nor her whereby she was worshipped and given a status, This 18 year German Ghost gained her divinity as a result ans became into a deity goddess or Angel and was able received into realm of Lord Jesus with this Taoist Shine as her crossover.

Inside her Shine, both Catholic Biblical relics as well as Chinese Taoist incenses , offerings etc...be found. This Roman Catholic Angel is being honoured by the means of Chinese Taoism.
Her remains were kept inside this Chinese Taoist Shine with an Iron or Sliver crucifix cross and some coins.

In year 1974 a granite company took over the hill for development and hence this shine was shifted downhill to it's present day current location known colloquially as the foot of 'Coffee Hill'. It is painted in yellow (holy colour of Malay) but has features that remind us of Chinese temple, such as a pair of lanterns, bronze censers for Jade Emperor and main deity, moon blocks, joss stick, joss paper burner, oil lamp, donation box, altars, medium's table and chair.

The Granite Company Aik Hwa gave the Shine a Jiangsu Urn which was a very expensive urn to store the remains of this girl. However, this urn was later believed to have been stolen with her remains and her Iron or sliver crucifix ( believed to be stolen for black magic or sorcery purpose) and the urn today in this shine is just a replacement urn & it is empty inside.

This Shine as of this year 2014 is already 118 years old. About 7 or 8 years ago a barbie doll was placed inside the shine for the spirit to reside inside. Previously in the past devotee just prayed to the urn.

On the main altar is a barbie doll to represent the German Girl and a host of things one would find on a girl's dressing table. This doll is being adorned in bracelets, a garland and a necklace. She is being surrounded by lipsticks, bottles of nail polish, perfume, powder, hair spray, brush, face cream, flowers, fruits, and other cosmetics which people have offered. Below the main altar is a stone that came from the spot where her corpse was found, which has been kept to remember her.

The Paranormal of the Shine
There are a couple of paranormal things about her shine and they are

  1. about 7 or 8 years ago (probably in year 2006) a Singaporean who migrated to Australia who was probably previously from this island of Pulau ubin island resident, dreamt of her 3 nights in a row and she instructed him the exact shop and doll she wanted him to send to her and it turn up to be true when he found the exact shop and doll as per her instructions. Hence , from Australia this man send over the doll to this shine
  2. There was no bloodstain on the stone of her shine which was believed she hit on before dying and found in front of the stone.
  3. Anyone who touched the urn behind the doll is said to be able to speak German

  4. Said that her spirits loiters around her Shine even till today, & there are Pocong or was it night angel spotted ?
Similar versions of likewise deities just like her

Some likewise local deities are like:
  • Datuk Gong or Na Tu Kong (拿督公) Datuk Keramat / Keramat Datuk of Malaysia

  • Mae Nak shrine in the Prakanong district of Bangkok Thailand

  • Tua Pek Gong (大伯公)

they are invisible but their powers is omnipresent

Yuan Dynasty Mongol and Mid-Autumn Festival

This festival originated as early as about 3500 years , there is already this festival.
However, where history is of concern , it is around the near Yuan to Ming dynasty period of China.

The Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368 ) & the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) during this transition period where by the Chinese overthrew their Mongol masters and established the Ming Dynasty was said to be on this day of August 15 (八月十五) of the Lunar Calendar or what some called as Chinese Calendar.

Mongol's Yuan Dynasty

According to Historical Legends of this festival, during the Yuan Dynasty after the Mongols conquered the Song Dynasty , Life in China was very oppressive by the Mongol Rulers. They were harsh and brutal to the people. The people of China lived with resentments of the Mongol rule whom they perceived as barbarians and some even claimed that they had some bad odour too.

During the period of the Mongol rule , the Chinese always wanted to drive these barbarians out of their land. Not wanting to be governed by barbarians whom the Chinese perceived themselves as civilized and that rule under the Mongols has no sympathy for the people's poor sufferings, & with much other ill treatments by the Mongols, the Chinese were determined to overthrow the Mongols.

Patiently and secretly the Chinese waited for their chance and made several underground preparations. The Chinese operated and communicated among themselves sliently for this rebellion.

Mooncake as Medium of Communications

They needed a medium of communications as they cannot openly communicate face to face or using pigeons. Hence Zhu Yuan Zhang , this Farmer who become a monk and become the Rebel leader and who eventually become the Emperor of Ming Dynasty China, knowing that the Mongols never eat Mooncake at all distributed Mooncake into the capital on the pretext of telling the mongols that it is for well blessing wishes to the Yuan Emperor for longevity.

However, unknown to the Mongols, inside of the mooncake is stuffed with a message inside written in paper. This was how the Chinese communicated among themselves right in front of the eyes and nose of the Mongols and yet unknown and not caught by the Mongols.

Family began to visit one and another , family to family , village to village, city to city, town to towns and nation wide eventually across the whole of China and they all brought moon cake during their visits & all these under the very watchful eyes of the Mongols escaped their attention and suspicion all these time.

The Final Call

Finally came the time when all was ready and done for the ultimate showdown to give the Mongols a surprise rebellion to overthrow them.

The Final Call to the whole nation was needed and hence the final distribution of the mooncake on a national scale was distributed. Inside the mooncake throughout the whole entire china to all Chinese was written with this message : On the Night of August 15 when the Moon is full , we will overthrow the barbarians !

Indeed itself on August 15th , all families in the whole of China came out to look at the moon waiting for the moon to become full. Finally when the moon was full, they turned their attention to the curious Mongols who did not understand why is every single people around the entire nation all looking at the moon and they even thought there was some strange phenomenon or catastrophe going on relating to the moon, and the next thing that they the Mongols knew was that everyone around attacked them with everything they got.

The Ultimate Finale with the Mongol

This rebellion was so successful as the Mongols was totally caught off guard ! It was something so unexpected and they could not react in time. The rebellion was on a national scale ! All parts of China , all regions all directions & everywhere rebelled in all together at the same timing on the same day in all the individual locations against them.

This was an impossible to repelled and crushed and quelled rebellion for the Mongols !

The Leader of the rebellion lead the rebels not only to capture back China from the hands of the Mongols but even drive them back into their heartland of their own home country and eventually conquered Mongolia.

Afterall, Mongolia has long been a threat to China throughout history & while they are weak , & disorganize, it would be best to put an end to this historical threat for good !

Extinct Mongolia brought back Life

Mongolia was hence wipe off from the surface of this world and existed no more until during the time of the soviet union of Russia, Mongolia broke free from Manchurian rule of Qing Dynasty China , reinstated and restored and regained their independence in the 1920s & was also a communist country together with Russia and China originally but finally became into a democracy country during the 1990s.

Oriental Temple Praying Knowledge

I am very sure there are many things you are not aware of when comes to praying to the Gods in the temples.
For the orientals there are certain things they believe in and it is good for you to know as well.

Praying time

This is a particularly time which you cannot pray & this time is between 12pm to 5pmThe remaining other time are also ok to prayBut the best time to pray in during sunrise and sunset.

It does not mean to say that there is anything offending or anysort if you pray at the time between 12pm to 5pm
but however just for your general knowledge, that time is really not meant for praying.

Meaning to the Number of Joss Sticks

Number of joss stick you use has meaning as well

The different number that you use is to the different level & status of gods & guardians to convey message for you to the direct god you are praying to

If to simplify their godly status , ranks and hierarchy in our human context
when you use the following numbers :

1 is to general workers of the bottom level
3 is to the junior executives to senior executives
5 is to the management level
9 is to the ceo, md, director etc... the highest at the top
2 don't anyhow use unless u know how to use. The number 2 is used for summoning

so you are actually seeking the different level of gods and guardians to provide you with assistance and help you convey message to the specific and particular god or buddha in the temple you are praying to.

Big Joss Sticks

There are also big size joss sticks as well.

if you are using the big size joss sticks, 3 will be really enough
1 represents 3. so please really do not go and use more than 3.

if however it is those really super big kind of joss sticks.
1 is really more than just enough as that 1 already represents 9

it is really very common and usual to see people using number 1 and 3 when praying to gods , buddha, ghosts and ancestors.

It is seldom to see people using numbers 5 & 9 when praying in temples. but it is common to see people who uses numbers 5 and 9 are people who are entrepreneurs , ceos etc....

however when it comes to praying to ghosts and ancestors , if possible do try to avoid 5 & 9

Usage of 2 Joss sticks

The number 2 wise, is use for summoning
Black magic, white magic whatsoever,as long as to summon the number 2 is being used.
To summon spirits from the underworld or call upon spirits from the heavens, the number 2 is being use.
Unless you really know how to use it, otherwise it is highly advisable and recommendable not to use the number 2.

Joss Stick Number Applications

This Joss stick number is universal for all Taoism, Buddhism, Shinto & Confucianism religions.
It applies to Chinese, Vietnamese, Koreans, Japanese, Thais, Laotians, Burmese, & Cambodians

the number they use is all the same but the meaning can be different from the Chinese.
